ChildFund Zambia and Forces Alliance in Zambia has joined the international and national communities in celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child which will be held on 11 0ctober 2021 under the theme Digital Generation Our Generation.
ChildFund Communications Manager Priscilla Chama says that, this day will help the nation focus attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment.
“We know that young people with intersecting identities such as age, race, gender and sexual identity, disability, language, class, religion, ethnicity etc. are the most marginalized”. She said
She state that, the day of the Girl Child acknowledges the importance, power, and potential of girls by encouraging the opening up of more opportunities for them.
Ms.Chama adds that, the theme Digital Generation Our Generation is a timely reminder for all stakeholders to invest time and resources for the girls to have a digital present and future.
“It is also clear that although the digital generation presents challenges for all young people, girls are more affected than boys, hence the need to ensure not only their access but also protection whilst they are online”. She added
Ms. Chama has since appealed to the Government and public institutions to take immediate action to increase children and young people’s digital literacy and to prioritize education in ICT subjects for girls.
