President Hakainde Hichilema says democracy is critical to maintaining stability in our society.
Speaking during the second summit for democracy at Mulungushi international conference center in Lusaka on Thursday, the president said that the summit provides an opportunity to showcase progress on commitments made during the first summit and mobilize collective action to respond to the challenges of our time.
President Hichilema said the summit for democracy is significant to Africa as it contributes to the firm resolve to strengthen democratic governance on the continent.
“We are determined as a continent to promote democratic governance as enshrined in the African charter on democracy, elections and governance,” he said.
The head of state further added that the theme for the summit being free, fair, and transparent elections captures the need for commitment to the principles of democratic governance.
