Some residents of Lusaka have complained over the continued abuse of alcohol by children, stating that this has exposed them to various illicit activities such as sexual abuse.
One of the residents in Chaisa compound, Dina Banda told one love radio news that most young people in the area under the age of 18 have been freely drinking alcohol especially on Christmas day, with some being sexually abused by adults due to their unconscious state, a situation she feels could have been avoided if parents where more responsible.
“Children under the age of 13 in compounds were extremely drunk, due to being careless, some were even sexually abused in bars during the Christmas night, government should be strict patrolling compounds during this festive season to keep children away from such acts” she said.
She wondered why authorities such as the Lusaka City Council have been reluctant in monitoring shops and bars, as this is likely to repeat itself ahead of the New Year celebrations.
Meanwhile when contacted for a comment the Bible Gospel Church in Africa BIGOCA has urged parents to be good role models to their children as kids emulate what they see, further calling on the government to ensure that alcohol is not sold to the underage.
BIGOCA Deputy Secretary General Bishop Lazarus Shumba said there is need for partnership from government with the church and the parents so as to mitigate this problem.
“we need the young children they are the future of this country, I think we need a Collaborative effort with government to deal with the matter, especially with the new year celebration coming” he said.
Bishop Shumba further advised the young people to stay away from alcohol in order to live a good life even after 2022.
