The energy regulation board ERB has assured the general public not to worry about the rampant increase of filling stations in residential areas.
Following a public outcry over the rapid mushrooming of filling stations near residential areas with fears that they might not be safe, engineer fossil fuel Moses Mwambeni stated that filling stations are mandated by law to adhere to safety standards before setting up a filling station.
Eng. Mwambeni further stated that ERB takes regular inspections in all service stations to ensure that public safety is adhered to and that all those that are found wanting the station is either fined or closed.
And ERB consumer affairs officer Chibulu Musonda disclosed that there has never been a law that prohibited one for opening up a filling station.
“The rampant increase is now attributed to the increase in competition in the business which has resulted into more players in the market optingĀ to take the business closer to the people”.
The two ERB officials where speaking during a media tour of Mt Meru filling station in marshlands and Oryx at East park mall in Lusaka.
