FRA AND MILLERS AGREE ON MEALIE MEAL PRICES.

The Food Reserve Agency FRA says it has put in measures to address threats of food insecurity in flood affected areas and the issues around the cost of mwalie meal.

FRA Board Chair Person kelvin Hambwezya, announced during a press briefing in Lusaka that the agency has continued to sell maize through the community sales programme especially in flood affected areas.

Mr. Hambwezya further said the communities are identified through vulnerability assessments conducted by local leadership in collaboration with the Disaster Management And Mitigation Unit (DMMU).

Under this programme, rural vulnerable communities are required to request for maize through their respective
leadership stating the quantities required and the period
for which the food supply would be needed,” he said.

FRA has also engaged and agreed with millers across the country over reducing prices of mealie between k160 and k170 kwacha per 25kg bag.

I further wish to request all participating millers on this program to continue supplying affordable mealie meal through their recommended retail outlets since they are buying affordable maize from the agency at affordable,” he further concluded.

Meanwhile, various millers across the country who were present at the briefing among them African Milling, Antelope Milling and National Milling said they have agreed to sale their mealie meal at k10 and some at 170 kwacha at retailers.

They also expressed gratitude to FRA for hearing their challenges and concluding on how much mealie meal should be sold to avoid misconception from members of society.
