“GROWING POPULATION CALLS FOR INCREASED PRODUCTION”

The Zambian Statistics Agency has announced that Zambia’s population has moved to19 million 610 thousand 769 from the 13 million as of the last census in 2010, with Lusaka leading the contribution with over 3 million people from the 2022 Census of Population and Housing.

The statistics reveal that 10 million and 7 thousand, 173 represent the female population while 9 million 603 thousand, 506 represent the country’s male population.

Meanwhile, Social economist Kelvin Chisanga said with the increase in population calls for the need to increase in production to sustain many Zambians.

Mr. Chisanga in an interview said, with the slow growing economy and fast-growing population, there might be an accelerated poverty rate in the country.

He further suggested that ways and means in bringing a balanced scale on production and productivity especially on local demand, in terms of consumption through government and the private sector should be considered.

“We basically have to see where we have been lagging behind for us to accomplish what we need to achieve,” he said.
