MEALIE MEAL PRICES NOT LIKELY TO REDUCE FURTHER.

The Millers Association of Zambia has supported the stance of government that mealie meal prices cannot be reduced as the cost of production remains high due to interest rates.

Association president Andrew Chintala said what determines the price of mealie meal is not a bumper harvest but the cost of production which is currently high.

Mr. Chintala noted that millers have not been charging cost reflective prizes to help cushion the Zambian consumers.

“What it is, is that the maize is stretching around four thousand kwacha per metric tons and if you look at that the price it is slightly higher,” he said.
