The Mumbwa Subordinate Court has sentenced five poachers to five years imprisonment with hard labour for illegal possession of 88kg of bushmeat.
Ministry of Tourism and Arts Public Relations Officer Sakabilo Kalembwe – Zacks said the five suspects who are from Chief Mwanachingwala’s area, were charged with one count of unlawful possession of protected animal contrary to section 130 (1) of the Zambia Wildlife Act.
“On 10 January 2022, officers from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) apprehended the suspects namely, Wanton Mweete, 37, Kelvin Ndongo, 37, Phineas Chilala, 42, Jackson Munkuli, 41 and Festus Lwano, 36, who were found with fresh Kafue lechwe meat poached from Blue Lagoon National Park and had two shotguns in their possession“, he said.
Mr. Kalembwe further said when the matter came up in court, they all pleaded guilty to the charge and are sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labor.
“The Kafue lechwe is endemic to Zambia, meaning it is not found anywhere else in the world, as such the species attract many tourists to visit the national parks where they occur”, he further said.
