Prison Care and Counselling Association (PRISCCA) has urged government to consider empowering the Zambia Correctional Service with seed and equipment money.
Dr. Malembeka disclosed that thousands of bags are produced at various correctional facilities across the country, making it a viable partner in meeting the deficit that the nation has when it comes to food security.
In an interview Dr. Malembeka added that correctional services has the man power to add to same deficit that the nation is facing.
Dr. Malembeka narrated that Kitumba in Kabwe alone produces over 70,000 bags of maize, a number if doubled through empowerment and funding can help in mitigating the shortage.
He advised that government needs to empower the prisoners with resources which includes agricultural seeds and equipment money so that they can boost their production.
“As PRISCCA, we know the capabilities of inmates in the area of agriculture, hence the need to empower them with revolving funds,” he advised.
