Street vendors in some parts of Lusaka have complained over the move by government to ban the sale of ready to eat food.
This comes after a directive by the Ministry of Local Government to all local authorities across the country, to restrict the sale of ready to eat foods to prevent further spread of the Cholera outbreak.
The vendors complained that, selling food on the streets is their only way of generating income and taking care of their families.
“How will we feed our families if we are stopped from selling in the streets”, they said.
Other vendors however said they are cautious about the disease and are willing to take all preventive measures.
Meanwhile, Kitwe City Council KCC has heightened inspection of foodstuffs in restaurants, markets, and other establishments involved in the sale of food.
The Council has also heightened inspection of public sanitary facilities to ensure that they are maintained hygienically.
According to a statement issued by KCC Public Relations Manager Mwaka Nakweti, the action is aimed at improving food hygiene and preventing diarrheal diseases such as cholera and Typhoid.
