The Zambia Consumer Association ZACA has called on the competition and consumer protection commission CCPC to investigate cartelistic behaviors in the price of sugar and cooking oil.
In an interview with One Love Radio, ZACA Executive Secretary Juba Sakala notes that the hike in the prices of sugar and cooking oil is unjustifiable and exploitative for Zambians.
“We strongly believe there is a cartel because the increase is unjustifiable. They can’t even say it’s the dollar, because the dollar has been stable for the past three months it was at k21 it’s only now that it has gone to k22. 2kg Sugar increased from k36 to k43 while cooking oil moved from k60 to somewhere k95. That is too much”. He expressed.
Mr. Sakala has advised business to put prices that are competitive and favorable for consumers.
“We know these companies want to make profits but they must not exploit consumers. Business should be a win win situation the consumer must also get value for their money”. He said.
He has further advised business entities to refrain from forming cartels that exploit consumers.
“Don’t make consumers desperate by putting unfair prices simply because you are the only one with a product and asking them to take it or leave it”. He advised
