The Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority ZAMRA has warned members of the public and health professionals to be alert on the four substandard and unsafe medical products that have been identified in Gambia as reported by the World Health Organization WHO.
In a statement signed by ZAMRA Acting Director General Makomani Siyanga and availed to One Love Radio News, ZAMRA said the four products which include oral solution and baby cough syrups among others which were manufactured by maiden pharmaceuticals limited in India are unsafe and their use especially in children may result to serious injuries or death.
ZAMRA said the authority has intensified country wide surveillance for Makof baby cough syrup, KofeMalin Baby cough syrup and Promethazine oral solution among others to ensure that they are not in circulation despite the products not being registered in Zambia and have never been imported in the country, but may have been distributed through informal markets.
“These products are reported to contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants,” it stated.
