The Zambian School of Driving (ZSD) has called for improved road safety awareness and responsible driving following recent road traffic accidents involving students from higher learning intuitions in the recent past.
Child and youth road safety officer Celine Chuma said the repeated tragedies are preventable, urging the public to act collectively to reduce the risks faced by young drivers.
“As an institution dedicated to promoting safer driving and protecting lives, we are compelled to speak out,” Ms. Chuma said.
In a statement made available to One Love Radio news, Ms Chuma advised motorists to adhere to road traffic regulations such as avoiding texting and calling while driving as well as the use of a seatbelt.
“Slow down, realise that Speeding doesnt save time, it costs lives. Never drive after drinking Even one drink can impair your judgment and coordination,” she said.
The driving school further encouraged road users to report dangerous and reckless drivers, stressing the need to look out for one another.
Meanwhile, the driving school urged all higher institutions of learning to introduce initiatives aimed at preventing such tragic losses.
Some of the proposed initiatives include the introduction of road safety workshops and programs for students including partnering with driving schools to provide refresher and defensive driving courses for students.
“ZSD stands ready to collaborate with all institutions of higher learning, student leaders, and government agencies to ensure safer roads for all,” she said.
