NATIONAL MOURNING DECLARED OVER

Zambian Republican President Hakainde Hichilema has declared the National Mourning period for the late former sixth Republican President Edgar Chagwa Lungu officially over

Speaking during a national address, President Hichilema said the government has done everything possible to engage the family of the departed sixth Republican President and that a clear decision has to be made.

Mr. Hichilema stated that the government extended the mourning period by another 9 days, making it 14 days in total, and began to fulfill all the commitments towards a state funeral with full honors.

He mentioned that as of June 18, 2025, the country prepared to receive the remains of the former President but was surprised by the family’s reversal of the agreed course of action.

He added that the country cannot afford a state of indefinite mourning and further called on citizens to remain united as a nation and maintain the peace the country is known for.

“Let us remain united as a nation and maintain the peace we are known for”.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hichilema expressed sincere gratitude to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and the people of South Africa for their exceptional cooperation and compassion.
