Sextortion and gender-based activist Thumeli Sitali has commended government for making all sexual offences non-bailable under a new Statutory Instrument passed by Parliament.
Speaking to One Love Radio News, Ms. Sitali said the new measure recognises the long-term trauma experienced by survivors of sexual offences. She noted that in cases such as sextortion, perpetrators often use their power and positions in society to silence victims.
She explained that denying bail to individuals who abuse their authority in this way can help prevent further manipulation or harassment of victims.
“The new Statutory Instrument should be supported by stronger victim support systems, increased digital safety awareness, and faster prosecution processes in order to have a meaningful impact,” she said.
