NORMALIZED WATER LEVELS STILL NOT ENOUGH TO MEET ELECTRICITY DEMAND – ZULU

Energy Expert Bornface Zulu says it is important to note that the demand for electricity has already surpassed the available and expected capacity, even when water levels in major reservoirs such as the Kariba and Kafue dams normalize.

Recent updates from the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) indicate that water levels in Lake Kariba have continued to see a steady rise.

But speaking to One Love Radio news, Engineer Zulu said the reality is that Zambia’s power generation infrastructure is not equipped to meet the growing demand, and that the country must look beyond temporary improvements in water levels.

“The recent investments and expansion in the mining and industrial sectors have significantly depleted our existing power capacity,” Engineer Zulu noted.

He said the developments, while beneficial for economic growth, have placed an immense strain on energy resources.

“It is imperative to acknowledge that without substantial upgrades and expansions in our power generation infrastructure, we will continue to face power shortages that could hinder further economic progress,” he added

Engineer Zulu has since urged government to prioritize key energy projects such as Luapula hydropower, Kalungwishi Hydroelectric, and Maamba Phase 2.
