ZESCO Limited, in a collaborative effort with the Zambia National Service (ZNS), says it is addressing the crucial need for continuous operation of milling plants across the nation, in response to concerns raised regarding food security during periods of load shedding.
ZESCO Limited Company Spokesperson Matongo Maumbi, in a statement says in an emergency meeting between ZESCO Managing Director, Engineer Victor Mapani and the ZNS Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi, held on Monday, both parties made commitments to implementing strategies that will ensure the stability of staple food production, especially mealie meal.
Mr. Maumbi states that the meeting follows a request by the ZNS Commander for ZESCO to consider maintaining uninterrupted power supply to the ZNS milling plants and its allied millers, including irrigation facilities across the country.
He said the Lt Gen Solochi underscored the importance of closer collaboration between ZNS and ZESCO to collectively assist the Government in averting possible constrained availability of the staple and other critical food crops.
“Eng. Victor Mapani committed to the well-being of the Zambian people as ZESCO understood the importance of food security in maintaining national stability and peace. Eng. Mapani added that by ensuring the continued production of mealie meal would prevent panic buying and the potential shortage of Zambia’s staple food. In the long run this would also keep stable the price of mealie meal,” he said.
